Overview
Trekking in Upper Mustang is a rare opportunity to experience the way of life of true mountain people who, for hundreds of years, had little contact with the rest of Nepal. Until 1950, Mustang was a separate kingdom with an officially recognized king, the Raja. He still lives in the ancient capital of Lo Manthang. Upper Mustang is geographically part of the Tibetan plateau, so this trip is similar to trekking in Tibet. The trek itself is of low-medium difficulty. The highest point is only 3,800 meters, but the winter cold, wind, and dust throughout the year makes the journey more challenging. Beyond Kagbeni, few accommodation facilities are available, so groups must be self-sufficient, especially for fuel. Porters may be hired in Jomsom, but it is preferable for mules to carry bags and gear to Mustang. Mules are locally available, more economical, and more environmentally friendly.
